BALTIMORE (WMAR) – Think dog park meets beer garden and cafe … and it’s coming to Baltimore by the end of the year.
âThe dogs run the show and basically it’s a dog lover’s paradise,â said Luke Silverman, co-founder of Bark Social.
Inspired by their puppies, Silverman and his partner wanted to create a place in Baltimore for the dogs to be social while they could too.
“He [Baltimore]is actually one of the least suitable for pets, which shocks everyone. It’s not that we don’t like our pets as citizens of Baltimore. It’s just that the options are relatively limited in the city, âsaid Silverman.
And that’s how Bark Social was born. Baltimore was supposed to be the home of the first location, but the plans fell through and they opened in North Bethesda earlier this year.
Now that a spot in Baltimore is secured, plans are underway to turn the vacant lot next to Cabbage into a second location, with hopes to open in December.
“This third will be a large covered patio, with foggers, heaters, outdoor televisions,” said Luke Silverman, pointing to the middle of a vacant lot near Boston Street in Canton.
With a terrace, social barking will have a self-service beer wall, cafe and astro turf dog park.
The emphasis is on the local. They already work with many companies in Baltimore for dog treats, merchandise and design. A local business, Dogs of Charm City, will have an on-site retail business.
âWe love the area. We love the city. We want to emphasize the regional aspect but also the national aspect. We are proud to be a Baltimore-based company,â said Silverman.
They teamed up with Dogs of Charm City to create a “give back” shirt where $ 4 from each sale will go to BARCS, the city’s largest animal shelter.
