Blackberries are super healthy for humans, but can dogs eat blackberries? Healthy treats are important for dogs in moderation to help prevent potential problems like hip dysplasia or obesity, but are these berries a good option to round out a healthy diet for your pup?

Happily, the short answer is yes, Dogs can eat blackberries. But as always, fruit should be shared with dogs in moderation. When it comes to your dog’s daily calorie intake, sugary products like fruit should be used account for only about ten percent.

However, your dog’s specific needs may vary. Always consult your veterinarian before establishing or changing your dog’s diet. In the meantime, here are some blackberry and dog facts to help you with your diet planning.

How are blackberries safe for dogs?

Not all of the health benefits of healthy human snacking translate to our dogs. For example, Blackberries are rich in vitamin C, which is great for humans. Dogs, on the other hand, produce vitamin C themselves without having to eat it.

However, these berries provide dogs with fiber, water, vitamin K and manganese. They’re also very low in calories, fat, and carbs, making them a great choice for the occasional healthy treat.

However, it’s important to keep these treats in small doses. Blackberries contain traces of xylitol, a substitute sweetener that is toxic to dogs. However, for poisoning to occur, your dog would have to eat a significant amount. A few daily is perfectly fine.

While blackberries are broadly safe for dogs, there are additional circumstances and best practices to consider.

Sugary treats like fruit and berries are fine in moderation for healthy dogs. But for a dog already plagued with diabetes, this one should be avoided.

Jams should also generally be avoided in all dogs. They often contain additives and concentrated amounts of xylitol.

Well, maybe you live near brambles and wonder if your dog can freely munch on them. That’s not a good idea. Often these shrubs are sprayed with pesticides, especially in public recreation areas. When ingested by dogs, they can cause harmful or even serious health problems.

In addition, these bushes are often inhabited by menacing wildlife such as wasps and mosquitoes.

To feed your dog blackberries at home, wash them thoroughly. Then feel free to have some fun while serving.

You can freeze them and stuff them in a toy or toss them to your dog. You can bake them into homemade dog treats – just pay attention to all the ingredients used. Or you can puree them with peanut butter to pour over your usual meal.
