Canine experts list 10 training tips to stop “unwanted behaviors” in puppies

Canine experts have released 10 essential tips to ensure your pup stops the “unwanted behaviors” from a young age.

The Dogs Trust has spoken of the importance of setting the ground rules from the day you introduce a puppy into the family.

Hard training is key to ensuring your pooch is well behaved later in life.

As part of this, the charity has listed a number of tips to make it easier for dog owners and their pets to feel the success.

Once owners are able to nail the basics down, the Dogs Trust suggests trying outside if you are both confident about doing so.

The basics include sitting, sitting down, coming and going.

The Dogs Trust writes: “A marker is a clear signal that tells your dog he’s done it right and can be very helpful when training a new behavior such as walking. B. Saying “yes” or “good.”

“So before you start, find out exactly what a marker is and learn how to introduce it to your pooch.”

They add: “Just as puppies don’t know what sitting or walking means until you teach them, they can exhibit other undesirable behaviors as well.

“That could be going to the bathroom indoors or pulling the leash. You should prevent these before they become a problem.”

The top 10 tips for training your pup are:

  1. Try it without your pup first so you are clear and don’t confuse them.
  2. Make sure the workout is done in a quiet space free of distractions.
  3. Make sure your puppy has eaten and used the toilet before you begin.
  4. Use only positive reinforcement – reward with praise or a tasty treat, and mix up what you use to keep it interesting for your pooch.
  5. Show your puppy what you want from him, don’t physically force him to do it.
  6. Remain calm and consistent.
  7. Keep the training sessions short (five to ten minutes at a time) – and focus on training a behavior before ending the session with a fun game.
  8. Record your progress – you could film it and/or write it down.
  9. Be patient. If the pup is struggling, stop and take a step back and go slower next time.
  10. Have fun and enjoy yourself – if neither of you do it, make it up another day.
