In the past 18 months, many of us have welcomed a new four-legged friend into our homes as dog ownership at the Kennel Club increased nearly eight percent in 2020.
But with 221 different breeds of pedigree dogs to choose from, there is a lot of thought to be found before choosing your perfect pup.
There are even scientific guides in which the psychologist Stanley Coren in his book “The Intelligence of Dogs” classifies the breeds according to instinct, obedience and adaptability.
One dog that is often high on people’s wish lists is the Chihuahua – one of the UK’s most beloved small dogs, they have a number of positive traits that make them a great family pet.

The tiny Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog recognized by the British Kennel Club.

One of the first written mentions of the Chihuahua was in 1520 in a letter from the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortés, who said that the Aztecs raised and sold the small dogs for food.

The Chihuahua takes its title from the Mexican state of the same name – it is the largest state in the country and borders the United States. American tourists in the 19th century brought the dogs home as souvenirs.

Several US cities, including Chandler, Arizona and Denver, Colorado, host Chihuahua races on the Cinco de Mayo (a celebration of a famous Mexican victory over the French).
