Cleaning dog ears

[ad_1]

Are you wondering how to clean dog ears? While ear cleaning is an essential part of your dog’s basic grooming routine, excessive cleaning can cause irritation to the ear canal.

“Always consult your veterinarian for the best way to clean your dog’s ear,” says a Kennel Club spokesman Country Life. “It is important that nothing is pushed into the depths of the ear canal, as this can cause damage or trigger an infection.”

How often should you clean your dog’s ears?

Cleaning your dog’s ears doesn’t require any special equipment; it can be done simply with a cotton ball and a dash of warm water (or a professional ear cleaner). Check with your veterinarian about how often you should clean your dog’s ears. Depending on the breed, this can vary from once a week to once a month.

According to Purina, droopy-ear breeds like Cocker Spaniels and Basset Hounds require more ear cleaning because they are prone to infection. Likewise, dogs who like to swim need to be cleaned more often, as moisture in water can make them prone to ear infections.

How to clean dog ears

1. To clean your dog’s ears, the first thing to do is to massage the ear for about 20 seconds to soften and release the material.

2. Then, starting at the entrance of the ear canal to the tip of the ear, wipe the inside of your dog’s ear flap several times with a cotton ball or damp cloth to pull any material out of the ear canal. Remove any visible dirt as well as any hiding behind the ear. Do not use cotton swab applicators (Q-Tips) as this can lead to an injury to the ear canal.

3. You can also use an appropriate dog-friendly ear cleaner, and your local veterinary office can recommend one. Then gently dry the ear with a towel. Don’t forget to clean both ears thoroughly.
