Dog expert shares tips on keeping Belgian Malinois as pets after movie ‘Dog’ hits theaters

WHEELING, W.Va. (WTRF) – A Belgian Malinois is the dog breed starring in the new movie ‘Dog’ starring actor Channing Tatum. The Malinois is causing a stir on the internet and social media because this particular dog was built solely for herding and guarding.

In the film, three different Belgian Malinois were used during filming. And some canine experts are voicing concern that pet lovers might want one for themselves.

According to canine expert Julia Bober, who is both a Belgian Malinois breeder and trainer, she says she is very familiar with this breed of dog. Bober owns Black Cobra K9 in Carrollton, Ohio and offers some advice on the farm dog, which was developed in the 1800s to work all day.

“There really can come up situations that people can’t handle, and so if you really want one of these dogs, you have to do your homework. You have to find a reputable breeder or rescue dog and be willing to live a lifestyle, a lifestyle that suits this breed.”

Bober says that the Malinois has a natural ability to hunt and that there is biting potential for this type of breed. She adds that they don’t like fast movements or high-pitched sounds.

She encourages anyone interested in bringing home a Malinois to have the dog properly trained, and also recommends speaking to the trainer about bringing your new pet into the public eye.

The Belgian Malinois is often trained for police and military work, and many of these dogs work as K9s in Ohio Valley law enforcement.
