Dog ownership rose nearly eight percent last year, according to the Kennel Club, as the lockdown meant people felt better able to open their home for a new pup.
The popularity of puppies now appears to be on the wane as prices continue to rise as demand outpaces supply.
There are a huge 221 dog breeds to choose from, so it’s best to do your homework before choosing your perfect four-legged friend.
But if you want a puppy who can do two laps of the park before more of his canine buddies have done one, there are a few dogs that should be at the top of your list.
Here are 10 of the fastest breeds according to the American Kennel Club.
It’s probably no surprise that the fastest breed of all is the greyhound. They were born to run, although the rest of the time they are surprisingly lazy and have an incredible top speed of 45 mph.

The Saluki is one of the oldest dog breeds and is believed to have come from ancient Egypt. With a top speed of 42 mph, they are the second fastest breed of dog.

In common bronze medal position for the fastest dog is the Afghan Hound. At top speed, they are a blurry coat and run at 40 miles per hour.

The other dog that can read up to 40 mph on the dog speedometer is the Vizla. If this Hungarian breed doesn’t get a lot of exercise, it can become destructive.
