Loyal boxer dog waits in an empty house for weeks after his family abandoned him

Proving that our furry friends’ loyalty knows no bounds, video of a Boxer dog crouching in a stairwell has gone viral after it was revealed he was there waiting patiently for his family to return after they moved out and had left him.

Almost two weeks alone, footage captures the moment Freon was rescued by Donna Lochmann Stray rescue from St.Louis (opens in new tab) and has been viewed more than 700,000 times since it was shared in July.

Lochmann first learned of Freon’s plight after a local landlord called the shelter to report that a dog had been abandoned on one of their properties.

A week after his tenants left the house, they called their former landlord to tell them their new apartment didn’t allow dogs and that they had left Freon locked in the stairwell.

After receiving the call, Lochmann got straight into her car and drove to the address the landlord had given her.

“When I broke down the door [open], I saw him huddled on one of the landings,” explains Lochmann. She walked gently down the stairs and was surprised that Freon let her put his leash on him without objection.

“He was a bit hesitant to come with me,” Lochmann said. “But after just a little persuasion with wieners, he headed up the stairs and right out the front door.”

While he didn’t have a name at the time she rescued him, Lochmann quickly gave him one after cleaning the air conditioning vent in her car.

“He kind of stood in front of us and pressed his face against the air conditioning vents,” Lochmann said. “That’s why he got the name Freon, because he liked the cold air on his face.”

Upon arrival at the shelter, Freon immediately captured everyone’s hearts and kissed everyone he came in contact with. While he required some medical attention due to the time he was alone, he had been left with several bowls of food and water, meaning he was in relatively good health.

While Freon may have been abandoned by his first family, it didn’t take him long to find a new one for good. The shelter says he’s thriving in his new environment and even has a puppy dog sibling to play with.

“We love you, buddy,” the animal shelter wrote in a post (opens in new tab) Announcing the adoption of Freon. “[There’s] don’t look back.”
