Small dogs don’t always seem to know they are small until they are around the big dogs.
It is often a source of tension when tiny Chihuahuas and Yorkshire terriers find their way into a universal dog park with hyperactive mastiffs or rottweilers, but the North Okanagan Regional Unit has found a solution.
They created a small park for small dogs at the Mutrie Dog Park in Vernon.
“The new section at Mutrie Dog Park will provide a fenced-in section for small furry friends who are uncomfortable with medium and large dogs,” the North Okanagan Regional Office said in a press release. “Dogs of all sizes, including small dogs, are welcome throughout the rest of the park.”
When construction is complete, which will begin this fall, the upgraded dog park will include a fence, access gates, a trash can, a dog bag dispenser, and signage to identify the site.
More plans are in the works after the small dog section is added. Future improvement plans include updated signage, planting and irrigation projects, path renewal, water fountains and a permanent washroom.
