It’s a good week to be Dune. The first part of Denis Villeneuve‘s adaptation of Frank Herbert‘s novel fired the box office and was officially given the go-ahead for a sequel. But will it fuel the Oscars? Gold Derby Editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss their Oscar prospects and those of another upcoming tentpole, Eternals.
You wouldn’t be shocked to learn that we both foresee that “Dune” will commit a murder in the below-the-line categories. But how does it look above the line? With 10 nominees banned, it’s likely safe for a bid for the best movie (it ranks fifth on the odds) while Villeneuve ranks third in the Best Director category Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”) and Kenneth Branagh (“Belfast”). But with a continuation on the way, Villeneuve will get Peter Jackson‘d and not win until the last part is published?
Last week we briefly discussed Timothee ChalametChances are in Best Actor, but in the last few days Rebecca Ferguson went into the chat as his mother Lady Jessica. Can she enter the race for best supporting actress?
SEE Oscar experts guess: Will ‘King Richard’ Will Smith win as Best Actor?
Then we turn our attention to another wannabe blockbuster, “Eternals,” which begins November 5th and is directed by the reigning Best Director champion Chloe Zhao. The film has, um, received very mixed reviews – it’s 56 percent on Metacritic and 63 percent on Rotten Tomatoes – and after we’ve both seen it, we understand why. But were expectations too high because of Zhao’s involvement? (You will also need this to follow the conversation.)
Elsewhere, we’re teasing our discussion for next week that will include “Spencer” and giving the advantage Beyonce for the time being in their possible showdown against Jay-Z in the best original song.
