In the past 18 months, many of us have welcomed a new four-legged friend into our homes as dog ownership at the Kennel Club increased nearly eight percent in 2020.
But with 221 different breeds of pedigree dogs to choose from, there is a lot to think about before choosing your perfect puppy.
There are even scientific guides that psychologist Stanley Coren uses in his book “The Intelligence of Dogs” to classify breeds based on instinct, obedience and adaptability.
One dog that is often high on people’s wish lists is the Rottweiler – a breed that is often mistakenly viewed as aggressive, but it has a number of positive traits that make them a great family pet.

The rottweiler is considered to be one of the oldest dog breeds in the world and originated in ancient Rome. Rottweilers marched across the Alps with invading Roman legions, protecting both the soldiers and their cattle.

This Rottweiler was named after the German town of Rottweil, where it was known as the “Rottweiler Metzgerhund” because it was used to pull the meat-laden butcher carts.

The American Kennel Club describes the Rottweiler as “a calm, confident, and courageous dog”. Even so, many people have a negative image of the Rottweiler being aggressive. It is believed that this misunderstanding stems from inaccurate portrayals in films and television – especially in The Omen, where a Rottweiler was shown violently protecting the son of Satan – the original “devil dog”.
