Spider-Man: No Way Home: Andrew Garfield, Benedict Cumberbatch Oscars?

[WARNING: The following story contains spoilers about “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Read at your own risk.]

Peter 3? More like Oscar contender 1. Andrew Garfield repeated his role as Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and its 2014 sequel in the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

Though the “tick, tick… boom!” Star disputed time and again he was in the film, his return to the big screen alongside that of Tobey Maguirewho portrayed the famous web slinger in Sam Raimi‘s beloved trilogy in the 2000s – was the climax of the action-packed film, in which several villains from the duo’s combined five films had also returned and may have just been completed Tom Holland‘s tenure as the title superhero. Garfield didn’t waste a minute of his screen time on the multiversal adventure, making every moment count after missing a movie behind his own trilogy when Sony canceled its franchise in 2015 to bring a new Spidey to the MCU. Aware of this, Garfield’s No Way Home team hilariously and emotionally gave Peter Parker the closure he was missing. Fans rave about his performance, which revealed his breadth as an actor and really allowed him to show off his comedic skills.

Garfield’s scene-taking twist – especially during the fight sequence in act three, in which fans are calling for a third “Amazing Spider-Man” film and re-evaluating his original tenure – is why the superhero film may give him a bigger boost for the Oscar – Campaign receives when a thing exists as its co-star Benedict Cumberbatch, who repeated his role as Doctor Strange and is the person responsible for bringing everyone from other universes into the MCU. However, both men currently do well on the Oscar ratings for best actor and are strong enough to win without the help of Spidey.

Cumberbatch, who plays the lead role Jane Campionthe 1920s western “The Power of the Dog” opposite Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst (the Mary Jane Watson to Maguire’s Peter Parker) is in second place with 4/1 odds in Combined odds from Gold Derby. With four experts predicting a win for him, he’s just behind Will Smith by “King Richard”, who has a quota of 17/5 and 18 experts and eight editors are convinced that he will triumph. Cumberbatch is performing well and has been on a nomination lock for months. But Garfield is on his heels after the odds after the debut of Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s “Tick, Tick … Boom!” in November. Garfield plays late Jonathan Larson in the Sleeper hit and is now in third place with 11/2 odds and three experts and an editor predicting that he will win after what appears to be a win a fan favorite over night. Both men killed it on the Critic Awards Circuit also.

But that’s hardly surprising. “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, like the rest of the MCUShe is littered with acting talent. In addition to Cumberbatch and Garfield, both former nominees for best actor, the film also plays Oscar winners Marisa Tomei and Jamie Foxx, as well as Oscar nominees Willem Dafoe, Thomas Haden Church and Tom Hardy (the last of them appears in a cameo during the mid-credits scene). Perhaps, after months of denying his involvement, Garfield’s involvement in the film isn’t the slightest surprise in the film; Rather, the film features two actors who may be nominated for best leading actor for their work in other films.
