The breed of your dog won’t cost you home insurance in New York

Animal lovers celebrate a new law passed by New York state legislature. As the Times union It has been reported that home insurance policies can no longer withhold coverage from pet owners based on their dog’s breed.

Previously, insurance companies had the right to refuse cover to homeowners if they believed their dogs were prone to aggression. Pit bulls, along with German Shepherds and Doberman Pinschers, are frequent targets of such a policy. Insurance providers were also allowed to increase premiums based on what type of dog their customers owned under the old law.

Animal rights activists have long called for this practice to be banned, as insurance companies’ lists of so-called dangerous breeds can be based on harmful stereotypes. Aggressive dogs are often the product of their environment, and focusing on genetics alone over-simplifies a complicated subject.

In addition to punishing animal owners, breed-specific bans can indirectly lead to the euthanasia of dogs that are difficult to adopt. Pit bulls make up a significant portion of all animal shelter dogs, and laws and guidelines targeting the breed discourage pet owners from adopting them.

Thanks to legislation signed by Governor Kathy Hochul in October 2021, New York pet owners no longer have to worry about the breed of dog they choose, which will affect their home insurance. But dogs of certain breeds are still stigmatized in other parts of the country. In parts of Florida, pit bulls are completely banned.
