Dog ownership rose nearly eight percent last year, according to the Kennel Club, as the lockdown meant people felt better able to open their home for a new pup.
The popularity of puppies now appears to be on the wane as prices continue to rise as demand outpaces supply.
There are a huge 221 dog breeds to choose from, so it’s best to do your homework before choosing your perfect four-legged friend.
But if you want a puppy that is equally at home in the water and on land, then there are certain dogs that should be high on your wish list
Here are 10 of the breeds born to swim, according to the American Kennel Club.
An incredibly rare breed, the Otterhound, as the name suggests, was used to hunt otters in the UK until the practice was banned in 1978. As an exceptionally strong swimmer, they even have webbed feet for extra speed in the water.

The UK’s most popular dog breed, the Labrador Retriever, was bred to collect shot wild fowl, which often ended up in the water, so being a good swimmer was crucial. Today labs like to take sticks and balls out of the water for hours.

Another webbed breed perfect for swimming, the Portuguese Water Dog was used by fishermen to move fish into nets and collect lost gear from the sea.

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, often known as âchessiesâ, have an oily double coat that retains heat and is water repellent – perfect for long swims in cold water. You are welcome to spend hours in the sea, a lake or a river.
