In the past 18 months, many of us have welcomed a new four-legged friend into our homes as dog ownership in the Kennel Club has increased nearly eight percent from 2020.
But with 221 different breeds of pedigree dogs to choose from, there is a lot of thought to be found before choosing your perfect pup.
If you are looking for a dog who will obey orders and not get upset, there is scientific research on the subject to guide you.
The book “The Intelligence of Dogs” by psychologist Stanley Coren is a seminal piece of dog literature that assesses the relative IQ of breeds – also by looking at how obedient they are.
So these are – officially – the top 10 most obedient pooches.

The top dog when it comes to obedience is the lively Border Collie. However, they do need a lot of exercise, so they are not the perfect pet for everyone.

The second most obedient breed of dog is the poodle. To be at the top level of obedience, a dog must listen to its owners’ commands at least 95 percent of the time on the first attempt.
