A large number of us decided last year to welcome new puppies into our homes – dog ownership has increased nearly eight percent, according to the Kennel Club figures – and demand for four-legged friends remains high after the lockdown.
There are a whopping 221 different breeds of pedigree dogs in addition to numerous crossbreeds to choose from.
But even if you have decided on a type of dog, the tricky task of choosing a name remains.
If you’re struggling, pet insurance experts Budget Direct researched the most popular dog names in over 100 countries – from Denmark to Costa Rica – and created the ultimate multinational list of nicknames for your mutt.
Here are their top 10 male names for dogs.
Max is the most popular name for a male puppy on the planet. In short for Maximilian it simply means “the greatest”.

The world’s runner-up in male dog names is Charlie. A short form of the name Charles means “free man” (or dog).

The bronze medal for the best male names goes to Buddy. This comes from the English nickname which means friend, or perhaps from the Gaelic word “bhodaich” which means “old man”.

Fourth is Rocky, perhaps due to the continued popularity of the boxing film series of the same name, starring Sylvester Stallone. It comes from the Italian “Rocco”, which means “calm”.
