Your guide to the Frankenmuth Dog Bowl 2022

FRANKENMUTH, MI — The Frankenmuth Dog Bowl returns to Little Bavaria, Michigan for Memorial Day weekend, Saturday and Sunday, May 28th and 29th.

Billed as the world’s largest Olympic canine celebration, the annual event will see hundreds of dogs compete in events including DockDogs and Disc Dogs of Michigan competitions, Border Collie sheep shows, a pet parade and a costume contest, trick contests and a dog amusement ride race.

Organizers expect more than 100,000 attendees at this free festival, taking place at the Frankenmuth River Place Shops, 925 S. Main St. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a two meter leash.

While entry to the Frankenmuth Dog Bowl is free, some events, like the annual Canine Cruise on the Cass River, require a registration fee.

The international Dockdogs competition takes place on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 am to 5 pm in the gravel parking lot near the river by the covered bridge. There is a pet parade on Saturday afternoon; Participating dogs and their owners may line up in the south parking lot near the River Place Shops marquee at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday. The 25-Yard Small Doggie Fun Run Race takes place on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. on the River Place Shops field. Vienna dog races take place on Saturday and Sunday at 5:00 p.m. on the River Place Shops field. And the Dog Breeds of the World Show takes place on Sunday at 1 p.m. on the Festival Square stage.

“Our events team has worked very hard to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all of our guests, whether human or canine,” Michael Zehnder, owner of Frankenmuth Bavarian Inn Inc., which owns and operates River Place Shops, said in a statement. “We’re looking forward to a hell of a fun weekend and the return of Bavarian Inn’s signature Memorial Day celebrations.”

Memorial Day weekend also hosts Balloons Over Bavarian Inn, where 25 hot air balloon pilots from across the country take to the skies in the morning and evening for competitions and return to the River Place Shops throughout the weekend for nightly balloon glows.

Visitors can see the hot air balloons light up and interact with pilots and their crews during the Balloon Glow Village event on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The Frankenmuth Dog Bowl 2022 ends on Sunday at 21:45 with a Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth fireworks show. The fireworks can be viewed from the large field east of the River Place Shops and can be seen across the city.
